Costa Concordia disaster Collision, Rescue, Salvage, & Facts

cruise liner crash italy

The salute—a maritime tradition where ships pass close to shore in a display of honor or greeting—proved fateful for the Concordia, as it encountered unforeseen rocks. The sad anniversary comes as the cruise industry, shut down in much of the world for months because of the coronavirus pandemic, is once again in the spotlight because of COVID-19 outbreaks that threaten passenger safety. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control last month warned people across-the-board not to go on cruises, regardless of their vaccination status, because of the risks of infection. Crews have finally completed the salvage and are towing the Costa Concorida to a scrapyard in Northern Italy. Through the confusion, the captain somehow made it into a lifeboat before everyone else had made it off. A coast guard member angrily told him on the phone to “Get back on board, damn it! In the aftermath of the disaster, legal claims mounted against the owner of the ship, Costa Cruises. They included lawsuits by the region of Tuscany and a €189m suit by the island of Giglio, which claimed that the accident and the presence of the downed vessel hurt tourism and the local economy.

It featured four swimming pools, a casino, and reportedly the largest spa on a ship. In July 2006 the vessel undertook its maiden voyage, a seven-day cruise of the Mediterranean Sea, with stops in Italy, France, and Spain. But the report noted that some passengers testified that they didn’t hear the alarm to proceed to the lifeboats. Evacuation was made even more chaotic by the ship listing so far to starboard, making walking inside very difficult and lowering the lifeboats on one side, near to impossible. Making things worse, the crew had dropped the anchor incorrectly, causing the ship to flop over even more dramatically.

These reforms ranged from revisiting antiquated practices to introducing cutting-edge innovations that elevated the safety standards on cruise ships. Consequently, the tragic Italian cruise accident became a pivotal point in maritime history, revolutionizing how safety was prioritized aboard these seafaring giants. Schettino argued that he fell into a lifeboat because of how the ship was listing to one side, but this argument proved unconvincing.

The groundwork laid by this unfortunate event serves as a fulcrum for improved oversight within the maritime domain, reassuring those who venture across the seas. Indeed, the legacy of the Costa Concordia continues to resonate, a steadfast reminder of the cruise industry has responsibility to uphold the highest regard for passenger safety, environmental stewardship, and preparedness. To understand the tangible changes post-Costa disaster, I delved into the modifications in training and regulations.

The giant craft will now be towed 200 miles across open ocean before being scrapped. Ortelli was later on hand when, in September 2013, the 115,000-ton, 300-meter (1,000-foot) long cruise ship was righted vertical off its seabed graveyard in an extraordinary feat of engineering. Francesco Schettino, the captain of the cruise liner, was jailed for 16 years for multiple manslaughter after the disaster that left 32 people dead. “We are not going to save lives if we don’t change the standards in the whole industry, not only of this particular captain,” he added. As befitting a star attraction, the captain arrived Monday at the makeshift courthouse through the back door in a car with darkened windows. Dramatic openingSchettino himself has become a lightning rod for international disdain for having left the ship before everyone was evacuated. The case of Francesco Schettino, 51, was of such enormous interest that a theater had to be turned into a courtroom in the Tuscan city of Grosseto to accommodate all those who had a legitimate claim to be at the closed-door hearing over the disaster.

When I got there I found myself with other crew members and passengers on this huge dancefloor. We were expecting some instructions, some kind of explanation, but the ship began to have multiple blackouts and power failures. On the tenth anniversary of the tragedy, the ship's Italian pianist Antimo Magnotta, who is now living and working in London, has relived his terrifying ordeal and told Sky News how he is still tormented by flashbacks from what he witnessed. Ten years on from the tragedy, Antimo Magnotta has revealed how he still has "terrible flashbacks" and can remember people's screams as the enormous vessel tipped over off the coast of Italy. But after eight years in the US and then Italian court system, they lost their case.

The jury that will decide the case, including a teacher, an investment banker and a corporate lawyer, have been seated in his trial, which will continue Monday. The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday, March 26 after a column was struck by a container ship that reportedly lost power, sending vehicles and people into the Patapsco River. Looking back at the events, the Italian cruise ship that sank displayed a spectrum of human experiences—from oversight, haste, and fear to valor, altruism, and fortitude. The aftermath did not just account for the salvage and inquiry but also witnessed sweeping reforms aimed at fortifying maritime protocols. As a result, the cruise ship that sank in Italy in 2012 has been a catalyst for revised safety standards that Carnival and other cruise lines have diligently implemented, often surpassing the basics to ensure such catastrophes are not repeated. Accused of causing the wreck by maneuvering the colossal vessel too close to Giglio Island for a display of acknowledgment known widely among mariners as a maritime salute, Costa Concordia Schettino was also censured for abandoning the afflicted ship. His actions—or lack thereof—brought about life-altering consequences for many aboard.

The Mediterranean voyage will last from three to seven days, depending on where it stops on the Italian coast - La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples, Messina or Cagliari. After a long forced pause due to the pandemic, cruise lines resumed their activities in 2021. However, a sharp increase in the number of cases has been observed in recent weeks and blamed on the spread of the Omicron variant. Forty-five of them were taken off the ship in Genoa "to be taken home safely" at the company's expense, it added.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 28 Cuban nationals from adrift vessel

Carnival Cruise Line, in particular, undertook a comprehensive review of their emergency response procedures and made several improvements based on lessons learned from the incident. While the ship eventually made it back to port safely, the incident served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the open sea and the importance of robust safety measures. It was the last thing Carnival Sunshine passengers expected when they returned to the Port of Charleston on Monday afternoon. Passengers had just endured a rocky cruise to the Bahamas only to come to a flooded parking lot and their cars ruined. Another passenger, RJ Whited, wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post cited by Newsweek, "Our cruise ship last night was literally sideways and slung everything in our room breaking, people in the hallways throwing up and sleeping on the stairs." Bill Hassler, a passenger on board the ship, told CNN he was "surprised I'm still alive" after the storm.

"Myself being in emergency services and retired, I knew nobody was going to come and rescue us with winds over 40 knots," Overcash said. "We were surrounded by lightning and the ship took a huge hit by a wave and sounded like it split in two," Tutrone tweeted. This analysis can then inform the development and implementation of targeted interventions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Their swift response and coordination were crucial in managing the situation and preventing further harm. The entity said it does not assume liability for vehicles or personal property left in the passenger parking areas. “It was shaking us so violently,” RJ Whited, another guest, told Charleston’s WCIV.

Moving Forward: Embracing Safety Culture and Continuous Improvement

A storm off the Southeastern coast of the US hit the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship during its return from the Bahamas last weekend, Fox Weather reported. Data from the National Weather Service showed that there were wind speeds of up to 46 miles per hour in some areas of Charleston over the weekend. Several individuals aboard the ship took to social media to share photos and videos of the ordeal, a number of which showed broken glass, doors knocked out of their frames, and water damage in certain corridors of the ship.

Some localized flooding occurred on the ship in different areas, as well as disarrayed furniture and other minor issues. Crew members were quick to respond and clean up the affected hallways and public areas, and no significant damage was reported. Unfortunately, the poor weather did lead to the cancellation of some evening entertainment, as the motion of the ship could have been unsafe for performers. The findings from these audits should be used as a basis for implementing corrective actions and enhancing safety protocols. However, the severity of the storm was initially underestimated, leading to a false sense of security among those onboard the ship.

"What we endured is indescribable, not only to feel it yourself but to hear and see it set in on every single person around you from adult, child, and the elderly is something I will never forget," Seifert-alicea told WCIV-TV. “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Guests and crew members on Carnival Dream were confined to their cabins when the ship encountered a severe squall in the Gulf of Mexico. This fosters trust and ensures that all parties are working towards a common goal of ensuring passenger and crew safety. Effective oversight and regulation are essential in maintaining safety standards within the cruise industry. Regulators and industry stakeholders must work together to establish and enforce robust safety requirements.

Carnival says stormy weather delayed cruise ship Sunshine's return from the Bahamas to Charleston, South Carolina

Continuous improvement is a key aspect of maintaining and enhancing safety standards in the cruise industry. By adopting a mindset of constant learning, organizations can identify areas for improvement and implement measures to mitigate risks. Passenger education and emergency preparedness play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on board. The incident highlighted the need for comprehensive safety drills and training programs for passengers, enabling them to respond effectively to emergencies.

The National Hurricane Center warned of a non-tropical area of low pressure off the Florida coast of Friday that was expected to head toward the Carolinas over the weekend. Meteorologists said that there would be gusty winds, dangerous surf and strong rip currents along portions of the U.S.’s southeastern coast through Sunday. Rough weather is common in the Gulf of Mexico during the winter months, though the severity of storms can vary considerably.

The crew worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone onboard. Despite the chaos and fear that engulfed the ship, acts of bravery and kindness were witnessed as passengers supported each other through this ordeal. The Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023 was a harrowing experience for passengers and crew alike. It all began with the brewing storm that was forecasted days before the ship set sail. Weather experts had issued warnings about a developing tropical disturbance in the region.

Cruise lines should be open and transparent about their safety practices, making information easily accessible to both regulators and the public. A safety culture goes beyond mere compliance with regulations; it involves instilling safety as a core value within an organization. This means that safety is prioritized at all levels and becomes an integral part of the company’s identity. Cruise lines have also increased their collaboration with meteorological agencies to receive real-time weather updates and make informed decisions regarding itinerary changes or ship rerouting.

The industry’s response to the Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident demonstrates its dedication to learning from past mistakes and prioritizing passenger safety. Cruise lines are continually striving to ensure that incidents like this are minimized, if not completely avoided, in the future. Passengers were informed of the worsening weather conditions, and the captain and crew closely monitored the situation. Despite the looming threat, the ship continued its course, hoping to navigate through the storm without incident.

She drove four hours in her new 2023 Kia Sportage from her home in Forest City, North Carolina, to Charleston for the cruise. “It was pretty upsetting and very overwhelming,” Kit Herold, a passenger who was onboard with her two teenage daughters, told USA TODAY. Crew Center, a cruise ship information site, posted a video on Twitter showing a flooded hallway, torn-off doors and other debris and destruction on board. Passenger Daniel Taylor said the crew “left us blind, not reassuring us what was going on, where we were heading to, what the plan was,” WCIV-TV reported.

Several other passengers, including Brenda Goodwin Sherbert, posted on social media about broken glass all over the ship and about water coming through their balcony doors. Cruise passenger Sharon Tutrone, a professor at Coastal Carolina University, tweeted Friday that the ship was rocking. She went on to say that the only time passengers heard from the captain was in the afternoon, when he told them the crew was experienced and would do everything they could to minimize discomfort.

We look forward to having you. He had told me about Sushi Cruise a few times and had wanted to share the experience with me and my wife. We finally found a time to go.

Restaurant Hours

Service was great at Sushi Cruise. Our server was both very involved in our experience and at the same time not there at all. He knew when the right times were to speak to us and not seem like he was interrupting and took cues greatly.

I love a good seaweed salad to start off my meal at any Japanese restaurant. It just had a fresh taste and it's light enough to instantly leave wanting for more. Also, my uncle usually hates seaweed salad, but enjoyed this one. The innovative menu relies on simple preparations with dynamic flavors. I entered Sushi Cruise around 8pm and not during the day like pictured above.

Menu

Next, we shared a medley of sushi rolls that I can describe as well prepared and fresh, which is exactly what you want when eating raw fish. We enjoyed the Rainbow Roll which is a California roll topped with tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado and massago. We also enjoyed the Godzilla roll which was a deep fried tempura roll filled with crab meat, salmon, scallop, eel and avocado topped with an eel sauce. This was my favorite roll.

He picked up on how my uncle mentioned that he loved ginger. The server always had a refill of ginger at the table for my uncle each time he finished it. Japanese eats & sushi selected off a conveyor belt in a riverside setting with a patio & NYC views.

Photos

Sadly I could not get a good photo that night, none were anywhere near good enough quality at night. I was impressed with the layout and vibe of the place though. It has an open floor plan with a great riverside view. It looks just as good at night as it does during the day. To say the least, I was very happy upon arrival.

Restaurant Hours

Sushi Cruise made it easy to not worry about the meal and truly enjoy my time. The server was attentive. I happily give Sushi Cruise a 4 out of 5 stars. We started with the seaweed salad.

It was after a long day at work and the wife had been feeling under the weather, so I met up with them on my own. I hated that the wife missed out, but I was happy that I was able to go. First because I always love to see my Uncle Anthony as I really do enjoy our conversations. Second, I enjoyed the restaurant. We value our service on using the most fresh ingredients with intricate craftsmanship in creating the dishes. The relaxed dining experience at Sushi Cruise is chic nonetheless.

The breathtaking open view of the NYC on Hudson River while dining coddle you with our delectable dishes. We hope you enjoy your stay. Sushi Cruise was a great experience. Was it because of the company that I was in or was it the restaurant itself. I love spending time with my family.

I recommend to try it if you see anything on their specials menu that sounds like that. I do look to update this post when I can get the name of it and a good description. Experience our traditional & new style dining, an extensive roll selections, creative new additions in a zen and modern atmosphere. The restaurant is spacious, dining areas with a zen atmostphere, spectacular view of the NYC skyline located right in front of the Hudson River. Our professional staff is well experienced in and will give your next dining experience memorable.

I am not going to go into detail about the other rolls so that I don't sound repetitive. But I would like to try to highlight the roll you see in the center of the photo above, the one with the jalapeno on it with messago. Unfortunately the name of it escapes me at this time, but it was on the special menu and had the right amount of kick to it.
